Stromboli Land of Men

It is necessary to understand the real nature of things to then record their character. I found myself in Stromboli with a commission for a book, depicting the life of the few residents who live in the island. About one thousand souls, who live out of fishing all year long and seem very uncomfortable when in summer the island get packed with curious visitors. So off season one is alone, feeling the roundness of the earth while in Stromboli, a bent on the edges horizon, follows you everywhere you go.  I was observing & experimenting the relations of the sea as it retreats from touching the land.   Time, light &  movement. The shape of the Island is literally a volcano that suddenly emerged, so the sea has great difficulty in embracing it, it almost feels as if it can not.  It seems like the water is sliding off the edges, almost as if the  island is foreign to water, which is a paradox, the volcano projects the island  into the sky,  so like detaching it from the water.

È necessario comprendere la vera natura delle cose per poi registrarne il carattere. Mi sono ritrovato a Stromboli con una commissione per un libro, che descrive la vita dei pochi residenti che vivono sull’isola. Circa mille anime, che vivono di pesca tutto l’anno e sembrano molto a disagio quando d’estate l’isola si riempie di visitatori curiosi. Quindi fuori stagione si è soli, a sentire la rotondità della terra mentre a Stromboli, un orizzonte piegato sui bordi, ti segue ovunque tu vada. Stavo osservando e sperimentando le relazioni del mare mentre si ritira dal toccare la terra. Tempo, luce e movimento. La forma dell’isola è letteralmente un vulcano emerso all’improvviso, quindi il mare ha grandi difficoltà ad abbracciarla, sembra quasi che non ci riesca. Sembra che l’acqua scivoli via dai bordi, quasi come se l’isola fosse estranea all’acqua, il che è un paradosso, il vulcano proietta l’isola nel cielo, quindi come se la staccasse dall’acqua.
