Cirene & Apollonia

Anime Di Materia La Libia di Ali Wak Wak, is a book catalogue illustrating the work of a unique artist based in Benghazi, Ali Wak Wak.  It was the reason why I was in Libya, to illustrate the life of this amazing character. I arrived  just a few months after the civilian war.  Driving around Benghazi, with a half-broken car without a license plate, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit the Roman town of Cyrene along the coast towards the border with Egypt.  It was the most uncomfortable trip I remember, abundantly rewarded by the discovery of Apollonia, the port city where it is said that Cleopatra had pools dug in the rocks, adjacent to the sea in which she bathed daily. But unfortunately, no Cleopatras for me, only goats during my visit.

This gallery is dedicated to Ali Wak Wak, who with his work has recreated life from death through the remains of vehicles and weapons recovered from the front.

Anime Di Materia La Libia di Ali Wak Wak, è un catalogo di libri che illustra il lavoro di un artista unico con sede a Bengasi, Ali Wak Wak. Era il motivo per cui ero in Libia, per illustrare la vita di questo personaggio straordinario. Sono arrivato solo pochi mesi dopo la guerra civile. Guidando per Bengasi, con un’auto mezza rotta e senza targa, non ho resistito all’opportunità di visitare la città romana di Cirene lungo la costa verso il confine con l’Egitto. È stato il viaggio più scomodo che ricordi, abbondantemente ricompensato dalla scoperta di Apollonia, la città portuale dove si dice che Cleopatra avesse delle piscine scavate nelle rocce, adiacenti al mare in cui faceva il bagno ogni giorno. Ma sfortunatamente, niente Cleopatra per me, solo capre durante la mia visita
